10 Mind Blowing Documentaries

Compiling just 10 is difficult so we’ve created a full list of recommended documentaries with summarised ratings here. There will be weekly additions to our documentary and film page so keep an eye out and if you have any films you’d like to recommend, please comment with them below and we will get round to replying and watching them all where time permits.

“Belief is the death of intelligence.” – Robert A Wilson

These documentaries are not listed as being 100% fact, they’ve been chosen for their thought provoking content and many discuss new ideas and concepts that are either currently impossible to be scientifically explored or have yet to be explored enough. As a note, Einstein’s special relativity theory was published in 1905 but wasn’t actually fully accepted into the physics community until 1920. So, I prefer not to dismiss the exploration of new ideas just because they do not adhere to the status quo, for that is the only way we make progress. So, onto the best documentaries on YouTube:

The Century of the Self is a thought provoking, four part documentary describing how Freudian and post-Freudian ideas about human nature were adopted by corporations and politicians to manipulate society and public values in the 20th Century. There is a particular focus on the influence of Edward Bernays, the inventor of public relations, on American culture, business, and politics. This is a well crafted, engagingly paced, and consistently interesting documentary, which has since developed a bit of a cult following.

Often referred to as ‘the greatest educational series of all-time’. Carl Sagan‘s ability to clearly communicate complex concepts in simple language without washing down the content of his explanations is such a rare approach. If you have the slightest curiosity about how the Universe works, this is the ultimate documentary series, taking you on a complete 13 hour ride through the Cosmos. The entire series is available on Youtube:

Hold your presumptions on this one, it’s probably not what you think. This documentary approaches the ‘new age’ and ‘all you need is love’ mindsets to question the over embracing of love and denial of negative reality. I’d be very interested to hear the opinions of Live Learn Evolve readers on this one, please comment below if you’ve seen it.

Once again hold any presumptions, this documentary is not advocating the end of the world. Led by Daniel Pinchbeck this film covers topics like sustainability, mind and consciousness expansion, permaculture, energy, spirituality, tribal rituals, psychedelic experiences, economy, social relationships and more. It explores the ever growing problems we face as a culture and surprisingly offers thoughtful solutions which can all be put in place immediately through today’s technology.

The corporation as a psychopath. Our daily lives are dominated by corporations, most goods, services, information and entertainment now flow from huge multinationals. But what if this dominant player in our existence is certifiably insane? This film is a compelling story of the evil that can be and is done by and in the name of corporations. Piles of detailed examples on top of interviews on top of documentary film clips, highly recommended.

A powerful visual masterpiece that takes you on a tour of the globe. If man sends another Voyager to the distant stars and it can carry only one film on board, that film might be “Baraka.” It uses no language, so needs no translation. It speaks in magnificent images, natural sounds, and music both composed and discovered. It regards our planet and the life upon it and stands outside of historical time. Highly recommend it’s follow up film Samsara too, which can be found here

Collaborative documentary piecing together some of the most thought provoking clips from some of the most recent internationally renowned philosophical icons including Alan Watts and Terrence Mckenna. Other themes include our creativity, our power as individuals and the power as a collective to manifest our own reality. The quality of the production isn’t mind blowing but the content is incredibly thought provoking. One of the best documentaries on YouTube.

The Structure of Infinity takes a more focused look at the fractal nature of the Universe. Through examination of The Mandelbrot set and Fractal Geometry, the second volume takes us on a journey through the Fractal Universe culminating in a paradigm shifting view on the nature of reality itself. I recommend watching the first volume if you are unfamiliar with Graham Hancock’s work, as for the other volumes, they are still on my watch list.

Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth’s climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

DMT The Spirit Molecule takes you on a journey to explore the possibilities of what this molecule, DMT could mean to man kind. Although flawed in places if you’re unaware of DMT this documentary does an amazing job of explaining both the experiences of the substance and the science of the mind. Medical doctors, physical scientists, artists, and spiritual seekers work together to explore and quantify the effects of potentially the world’s most powerful psychotropic substance.

Four Horsemen is also a great documentary, similar to I Am or the Zeitgeist films but from the perspective of more respectable intellectuals..

      • Believer

I have no respect for intellectuals. It is the believers that will change this world

  • Jeremy Lynes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1GCeuSr3Mk Serious reexamination of the official 9/11 narrative. 5.6 hours long, but well worth it…..by an award winning documentary maker.

  • Defiant

I WAS interested…but as soon as you tell me that these “documentaries” are not all based on fact…I have to ask if you know what a documentary IS! I just read that statement as you putting REAL documetaries on the same footing as say, the HUGE tangle of lies represented by Michael Moore’s body of “work.” You lose me there…

    • livelearnevolve

      Hi Defiant,

If you check the oxford dictionary you’ll see that ‘documentary’ is defined as ‘consisting of or based on official documents’. It’s the most appropriate universal noun for promoting these videos and also if you re-read we did not say they are not ‘based on fact’ we said they are not listed in our opinion as ‘100% fact’. Many similar sites to us push out the derogatorily labelled ‘conspiracy theory’ type content as truth, whereas we prefer to offer out thought provoking content without attached belief, where the readers openly voice their own uninfluenced opinions.

      Thanks for reading!

      • Christian Valenzuela

That is a slight word change, but believe their point is the same.

        • Suck it defiant

I think the whole point of a documentary is to make you think, not learn. Therefore a documentary having fact is a bogus. anybody can make a documentary, but certainly everyone views the world differently so it’s impossible for anyone to make a “factual” documentary as it is all based on perception

  • Aivilo Truoccm

Another very good one ks The Power of Nightmares.

    • livelearnevolve

Thanks Aivilo, will definitely check this one out, thanks for commenting

  • Aivilo Truoccm

    Sorry it is on youtube.

  • Brookin

The Power of Nightmares is a 3-part BBC documentary about the end of the politics of hope and the rise of the politics of fear – it also explains where Al Qaeda actually came from. Give them a try – I found a copy on a file sharing site with a ship as a mascot!

  • Angelina Sereno

Surviving Progress is a masterpiece! Check it out if you haven’t seen it, it’s free on YouTube. :)

  • Alexandra Kuvaldina

“Earthlings” is the type of documentary that defines mind blowing.
